As of December 31, 2024, Stockholm will enforce a ban on gasoline and diesel cars in parts of the city center, becoming the first in the world to do so.
This decision is part of the city's comprehensive strategy to reduce car traffic by 30% and transportation emissions by 80% by 2030 to meet climate goals.
According to Traffic Commissioner Lars Strömgren, more street space will be reallocated for bicycles, pedestrians, and bus lanes.
This also includes transforming areas like Gamla stan into pedestrian zones and implementing bus-only lanes in various parts of the city.
The city's ambitious plan aims to lead global efforts in reducing urban emissions.
