Sweden Set to Ramp Up Efforts for Net-Zero by 2045

Published: 2024-02-20

The Swedish government has outlined a bold strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, a target affirmed by Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari.

Central to this ambitious goal is a significant increase in the country's reduction obligation, a move that has been hinted at but not explicitly detailed until now.

According to reports by Dagens Nyheter, which had access to statistics from the Swedish Energy Agency, the proposed plan would see the reduction obligation for diesel increase to 26.9% and for gasoline to 14.4%, a steep rise from the current 6%.

This approach aims to meet climate targets through a combination of enhanced reduction obligations and other measures such as carbon taxes, subsidies, and emissions trading.

Pourmokhtari emphasized that although the focus has been on the reduction obligation, achieving emission reductions could be realized through various mechanisms, underscoring the government's commitment to a multi-faceted strategy in addressing climate change.
