Sweden's Spring Whiplash: From -30°C to 20°C

Published: 2024-04-05

From the frigid depths of minus 30 degrees in northern Sweden to the promising warmth of up to 20 degrees in the southern region of Småland, the Scandinavian country is experiencing a dramatic temperature swing this spring.

Residents in the northern villages of Naimakka, Nikkaluokta, and Karesuando witnessed temperatures plummeting below minus 30 degrees during the night.

Meanwhile, meteorologists forecast a significant rise in temperatures in the southern parts, potentially reaching the 20-degree mark by the weekend.

This rapid change in weather, from snow chaos and icy roads to potential spring warmth, exemplifies the unpredictable nature of the season, according to SVT's meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt.

Despite the cold lingering in the north, the southern part of the country can expect warmer air, intermittent sunshine, and varying conditions including clouds, rain, and some snowfall.
