Stockholm will remove 81 public toilets next year due to expiring contracts, including 66 built by JCDecaux in exchange for advertising spaces.
Despite being functional, the old toilets will be replaced at the city's expense, estimated at 20 million kronor for the removal of the current structures.
New facilities are expected to take two years to complete.
Fees for using some of the new toilets may increase from five to ten kronor.
Traffic Commissioner Lars Strömgren emphasized the city cannot extend the old agreement or buy the existing toilets.
