Stockholm Sewage Project Delayed and Over Budget

Published: 2024-03-25

The renewal project of Stockholm's sewage system, known as "Stockholm's Future Sewage Treatment," has encountered significant delays and cost overruns, escalating into the billions.

The former CEO of Stockholm Water and Waste was removed from his position after approving a sub-project worth 1.4 billion SEK without political backing.

This sub-project, related to the Sickla treatment plant, was initiated without the necessary approvals from the Stockholm Water and Waste board or the municipal council, violating the city's investment regulations.

An external investigation is currently underway, as the city's governance accuses the former CEO of circumventing democratic decision-making processes.

The financial burden of these overruns is expected to fall on taxpayers through increased water utility charges, with the sewage system projected to be fully operational by 2031.
