Controversial Lynx Hunt Begins Amid Livestock Concerns

Published: 2024-03-01

This Friday marks the commencement of the lynx hunting season in Sweden, with a quota allowing for 143 animals to be culled, slightly less than the previous year.

The decision, supported by 14 county administrative boards, aims to address the increasing incidents of lynx attacks on livestock, particularly sheep, as evidenced by a notable case in Bollebygd where a farmer lost two sheep to such an attack.

However, the hunt has sparked controversy, with critics labeling it as trophy hunting and questioning its legality under EU conservation directives.

Despite opposition, proponents argue the cull is necessary to balance the lynx population and protect livestock.

The debate continues as the Swedish Predator Association plans to appeal to the EU Court, challenging the hunt's legitimacy.
