Swedish-First Education Proposal

Published: 2024-06-26

The Social Democrats in Sweden propose that primary schools with an English focus should teach at least 75% of the time in Swedish.

Currently, schools allowed to teach more in English must ensure that at least 50% of instruction is in Swedish.

Party leader Magdalena Andersson cites research showing that learning in one's native language is most effective.

The proposal would impact schools like Internationella Engelska Skolan, which may need to increase Swedish instruction and hire certified teachers.

The goal is to strengthen Swedish in schools to enhance societal cohesion.
