Sweden's Schools to Expand to 10 Years

Published: 2024-09-17

Sweden is set to transform its education system by introducing a ten-year compulsory schooling program starting in 2028. This reform will see the current preschool class for six-year-olds replaced by a new first grade, aiming to enhance early literacy and numeracy skills.

The initiative, supported by the government and the Sweden Democrats, is a response to concerns over declining literacy rates, particularly among students from non-Swedish speaking backgrounds.

Education Minister Johan Pehrson emphasized the importance of early intervention in reading and writing to prevent future educational disparities.

The government plans to invest 194 million kronor in 2028, increasing to 389 million kronor annually from 2029, to support municipalities in implementing these changes.

This move is part of a broader effort to return to traditional teaching methods, focusing on books and teacher-led instruction, to improve educational outcomes.
