Andersson Calls for End to Market Schools

Published: 2024-06-26

Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, delivered a speech at Almedalen, stressing the need for political control over Sweden's societal development, particularly in education.

Andersson reiterated her party's stance to halt the establishment of new profit-driven private schools and eventually abolish the market-based school system, arguing that it drives segregation and injustice.

Despite trying to keep the party cohesive, her approach has been criticized for not attracting new voters, with critics noting that her leadership style is better suited for governance than opposition.

Andersson's speech marked a shift by focusing less on opposing the Sweden Democrats and more on presenting Social Democrat policies.

However, it remains unclear whether this strategy will suffice to regain power by the 2026 elections.
