The Swedish government has proposed a ban on cousin marriages, aiming to address issues of honor-related violence and oppression.
This proposal, part of the Tidö Agreement, also seeks to prohibit marriages between other close relatives, such as uncles and nieces, and to remove existing dispensations for half-siblings.
The move follows concerns about the risks of forced marriages and the oppression of women and girls.
Additionally, marriages between cousins conducted abroad will not be recognized in Sweden.
The proposal aligns with similar measures in Norway, where health risks associated with cousin marriages have been highlighted.
