Sweden Considers Ban on Conversion Therapy

Published: 2024-08-03

Swedish Equality Minister Paulina Brandberg has opened the door for a potential law against conversion therapy for LGBTQI individuals, following criticism from the Social Democrats regarding the government's lack of action on the issue.

Despite a previous commitment to investigate the criminalization of such practices, no new inquiry has been initiated since a 2023 report concluded that existing laws already cover many related offenses.

Brandberg acknowledged the delay but emphasized that the government is working on the matter.

Meanwhile, religious leaders, including Jenny Dobers from Equmeniakyrkan, have condemned conversion therapy, asserting that it is harmful and contrary to their belief that God created people as they are.

The United Nations has equated conversion therapy with torture and called for a global ban, a stance supported by several European countries, though it remains legal in Sweden.
