Sweden Prepares for Rising Russian Threat

Published: 2024-12-29

Sweden is ramping up its defense efforts amid growing concerns over Russian aggression and hybrid threats in the Baltic region.

Vice Admiral Ewa Skoog Haslum, now leading Sweden's military operations, warns of the challenges posed by an unpredictable global landscape.

She highlights the difficulty of protecting critical infrastructure, such as undersea cables, from sabotage and hybrid attacks.

Sweden is also integrating more closely with NATO, with 600 troops set to join a NATO force in Latvia next year to deter Russian advances.

Haslum stresses the importance of national unity and robust infrastructure to counter these threats.

Despite Russia's struggles in Ukraine, she cautions that their military capabilities continue to evolve, posing a long-term risk to regional stability.
