Sweden Warns of Heightened Russian Military Threat

Published: 2024-02-19

Sweden's military intelligence warns of the escalating security risks posed by Russia, despite the nation's current focus on the Ukraine conflict.

General Lieutenant Thomas Nilsson, head of the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must), cautions against underestimating Russia's military threat in the region, emphasizing the country's high-risk behavior and ruthless actions under its current leadership.

The 2023 annual overview highlights Russia's intent to bolster its military strength post-Ukraine conflict losses, despite facing economic challenges, loss of key competencies, and extensive sanctions.

Nilsson points out the increased war production and recruitment in Russia, aiming to refill its military ranks.

However, the immediate threat level to Sweden has not heightened, with resources primarily redirected to Ukraine, leaving the military presence around Sweden unchanged.

Nilsson also warns of the heightened risk of military incidents due to the current high-tension situation and the potential for further escalation of the war in Ukraine.

Alongside the military threat, Sweden faces significant espionage activities from foreign states, including Russia, China, and Iran, aiming to disrupt vital systems, access protected information, and influence decision-making.

Nilsson urges vigilance, especially in the face of potential disinformation campaigns in the upcoming election year of 2024.
