Sweden Mulls US Request for Red Sea Military Support

Published: 2024-02-03

The United States has formally requested Swedish participation in a military operation in the Red Sea, aimed at securing trade routes and countering the Huthi movement's attacks on commercial shipping.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, referencing Sweden's anticipated NATO membership, acknowledged the country's expectation to remain active in international security efforts.

The request, confirmed by Defense Minister Pl Jonsson's press secretary Johan Hjelmstrand, comes as Sweden considers both EU-led and US-led missions in the region.

While no decision has been made, the Swedish government is evaluating the feasibility of supporting the operations, and any deployment of armed forces would require parliamentary approval and a consensus among all political parties.
