A recent survey reveals that 38% of social workers in Sweden have faced threats or violence in the past two years, a slight increase from previous years.
The alarming trend has prompted calls for a safety commission by the union Akademikerförbundet SSR, which seeks collaboration between unions, employers, and the government to address the issue.
"Amira," a social worker, shared her harrowing experience of being physically attacked while on duty, highlighting the urgent need for better protection and support.
Despite receiving backing from her employer, Amira expressed disappointment with the union's response.
The situation is exacerbated by misinformation campaigns, such as the LVU campaign, which falsely accuses Swedish authorities of kidnapping Muslim children.
The union warns that the rising violence could deter individuals from pursuing careers in social work, potentially leading to broader societal challenges.
