A groundbreaking report released on International Women's Day reveals a troubling reality for Sami women in Sweden.
Commissioned by the Sami Parliament and conducted by Umeå University, the study unveils that almost one in three Sami women have experienced physical violence.
The report, titled "Violence Against Sami Women," goes beyond numbers, including interviews with over 30 individuals working within societal support structures for victims of violence across the Swedish part of Sápmi.
It highlights a fear among some women of losing their Sami community in the event of a divorce, which may account for higher vulnerability to violence.
On a day meant to celebrate women's rights, this report sheds light on the urgent need for specific strategies and action plans to protect Sami women.
