Monarchy Shift: Danish Queen Abdicates, Swedish King's Support Rises

Published: 2024-01-07

Following the surprise announcement of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark's abdication, the focus has shifted towards other reigning monarchs, particularly King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

The Swedish royal household has dismissed claims that the King might follow his Danish cousin's lead.

A recent survey by Demoskop reveals that support for King Carl XVI Gustaf is stronger than it has been in years, with 46% of Swedes believing he should remain as Head of State, a six percentage point increase from a previous poll in September.

The Danish heir apparent, Crown Prince Frederik, is set to take the throne, marking the first time a Danish monarch has abdicated in over 500 years.

Meanwhile, in Australia, there is jubilation over the prospect of Danish Crown Princess Mary, originally from Tasmania, becoming the first Australian-born Queen.
