Danish Queen Margrethe II Abdicates, Son to Ascend Throne

Published: 2023-12-31

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced her abdication from the throne after 52 years, an unexpected move that has surprised many including author and journalist Ebba Kleberg von Sydow.

The Queen made this announcement during her annual New Year's speech.

Her son, Crown Prince Frederik, will take over as king.

The Queen cited increasing age and deteriorating health as the reasons for her decision, which will be effective from January 14th, exactly 52 years after she was crowned.

Upon Frederik's ascension, his son, Prince Christian, will become the new Crown Prince.

This marks the first time in 500 years that a Danish monarch has abdicated, making the announcement highly sensational.

The Swedish Royal Court stated that they were aware of Queen Margrethe's decision before it was made public.

Queen Margrethe's abdication will make her cousin, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, the longest reigning living monarch in Europe.
