Hungarian Parliament Approves Sweden's NATO Bid

Published: 2024-02-26

In a historic vote, the Hungarian parliament has officially approved Sweden's application to join NATO, marking the final parliamentary approval needed for Sweden's membership in the alliance.

With a decisive vote of 188 in favor and only 6 against, the decision now awaits the president's signature, after which it will move to the United States for further ratification.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson heralded the day as historic, emphasizing Sweden's readiness to contribute to NATO's security.

This approval concludes a prolonged process marked by hurdles, notably opposition from Turkey and Hungary, and fulfills one of the key promises of the Swedish government.

The inclusion of Sweden as NATO's 32nd member is anticipated to strengthen the alliance's collective security.
