Sweden's NATO Membership Nears as Turkey Approves, Hungary Faces Vote Calls

Published: 2024-01-24

Sweden's NATO membership application is drawing to a close after a convoluted process marked by delays from Turkey and Hungary.

Turkish parliament voted in favour of Sweden's application with 287 votes for and 55 against from a total of 346 votes.

However, the approval is pending the formal ratification by President Erdogan.

In the meantime, Hungary, which has vowed not to be the last NATO member to ratify Sweden's application, is facing calls for an immediate parliamentary vote on the issue by the country's social-democratic opposition party.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has extended an invitation to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for a visit to discuss the NATO entry.

Swedish foreign minister Tobias Billström dismissed the idea of negotiations, stating that all 31 NATO countries have already approved Sweden as a candidate country.
