Hungary Set to Approve Sweden's NATO Bid

Published: 2024-02-26

Today marks a significant day for Sweden as the Hungarian parliament is expected to approve Sweden's NATO application.

The vote, scheduled to occur between 4 and 6 PM, is the third item on the parliament's agenda.

Following the approval, Hungary's temporary president will have five days to sign off on the decision, after which the document will be flown to the USA for final ratification.

This step paves the way for Sweden's official invitation to join NATO, with either the Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström or Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expected to sign the accession document in the presence of NATO's Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg.

Upon completion, Sweden will raise its flag at NATO headquarters in Brussels, marking its membership.
