Governor Faces Backlash Over Friend Appointments

Published: 2024-04-16

Anna Kinberg Batra, the current governor of Stockholm, faces criticism after appointing close friends to top positions within the Stockholm County Administration, bypassing standard recruitment processes.

One of the roles was advertised solely by a notice in the reception area, with only her friend applying.

This has prompted investigations by both the union and the Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsman (JO) concerning potential violations of public employment laws, which mandate hiring based on merit and ability.

Critics argue these actions may undermine the principles of impartiality and fairness in public service appointments.

In response, Kinberg Batra insists the recruitment followed minimum legal requirements, emphasizing that all appointments are based on merit.
