In a swift move, Sweden's National Agency for Education has announced the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject in high schools starting this fall, a year earlier than initially planned.
This decision comes in response to the rapid advancements in AI technology.
However, the sudden implementation has highlighted a significant shortage of qualified teachers, with only eight certified to teach AI across the country.
To address this, teachers already certified in subjects like technology, mathematics, programming, interface design, or web development can become eligible to teach AI by completing 15 university credits in the field.
The AI curriculum will focus on societal impacts and problem-solving applications of AI.
The subject will be available in the natural sciences and technology programs, as well as an elective for other programs, and will also be offered in adult education (Komvux).
