A red-listed woodpecker has halted many logging operations in mountain-adjacent forests over the past year, according to Ekot's review of the Swedish Forest Agency's decisions.
The three-toed woodpecker is seen by environmental organizations as the savior of ancient natural forests, but it has also sparked frustration and anger among many forest owners.
"It's gotten out of hand.
He's everywhere," one forest owner told Ekot.
Ekot's investigation shows that Jämtland County has seen the most deforestation of this type of forest in recent years.
Forest owner Per Carlsson regrets cutting down part of his forest a few years ago and says it "looks awful.
" However, Pelle Sahlin from the forestry company Fria Skog argues that forestry serves an important economic function in the area.
