Skolinspektionen, Sweden's national school inspection authority, has ordered the closure of Arena Academy in Gothenburg, affecting a total of 570 students.
The decision comes as a result of Edinit AB, the company operating Arena Academy in both Gothenburg and Stockholm, losing its license to run upper secondary schools.
This drastic measure has been taken due to serious deficiencies relating to the company's ownership and management circle.
Specifically, the inspection found that individuals deemed unsuitable by the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) had been employed in positions close to students and in leadership roles.
This is not the first instance of Skolinspektionen shutting down schools managed by Edinit AB; three schools in Stockholm and Gothenburg were closed in March 2022. The current closure also affects a sister school in Stockholm, with the enforcement starting from June 14, 2024. Following the closure, it is the responsibility of the students' home municipalities to provide them with alternative schooling options.
Rasmus Rossi, CEO of Edinit AB, expressed surprise and disagreement with the decision, indicating plans to appeal the ruling.
