Sweden Tightens School Safety Measures

The Swedish government has announced new measures to enhance school safety following a tragic school shooting in Örebro.

Proposed changes include granting schools the legal right to search students' bags, a measure that will apply to all levels of education, from primary schools to adult education centers.

Additionally, schools will implement stricter entry controls using locks, tags, or access cards to prevent unauthorized access.

The government also plans to mandate preparedness plans for violent situations and increase training for staff and students, including drills for lockdown scenarios.

Social Minister Jakob Forssmed emphasized the importance of early intervention through improved student health services.

The proposed legislation is expected to take effect on July 1, 2025, aiming to create a safer environment for all students.
