A Swedish woman previously convicted of severe war crimes and gross violations of international law has been requested to be detained on new suspicions, including genocide against the Yazidi minority in Syria.
The 51-year-old woman from Western Sweden, Lina Ishaq, is currently serving a six-year sentence for recruiting her underage son as a child soldier for the Islamic State.
The alleged crimes took place in the city of Raqqa, once proclaimed the capital of ISIS, between August 2014 and December 2016. Prosecutors have not disclosed specific actions but confirmed the charges relate to genocide, crimes against humanity, and severe war crimes.
The woman, who denies the allegations, is said to have been an active member of the violent Islamist environment since the turn of the millennium.
Her case highlights the ongoing efforts to hold ISIS affiliates accountable for atrocities committed during the height of the terror group's control over parts of Syria and Iraq.
