Historic Trial for IS-Linked Swedish Woman

Published: 2024-09-19

Lina Ishaq, a 52-year-old woman from Halmstad, Sweden, faces historic charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and severe war crimes.

The charges relate to her alleged actions in Raqqa, Syria, between 2014 and 2016, where she is accused of holding nine Yazidi individuals, including children, in slave-like conditions.

This marks the first time such charges are being tried in Sweden, particularly concerning the Islamic State's attacks on the Yazidi minority.

Prosecutors allege that Ishaq subjected her captives to severe suffering, forced labor, and indoctrination, while also selling some to IS, knowing they faced potential death or sexual abuse.

Despite these grave accusations, Ishaq denies all charges, claiming she never sold anyone.

Her trial is set to begin in early October, and it will be a significant legal test of Sweden's ability to prosecute international crimes.
