Sweden's Controversial Repatriation Grant Increase

Published: 2024-09-12

The Swedish government plans to significantly increase the repatriation grant for immigrants from 10,000 to 350,000 kronor by 2026, aiming to encourage more voluntary returns.

This initiative, backed by the Tidö parties (Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals, and Sweden Democrats), is set to allocate 1.4 billion kronor in the 2026 budget.

The government believes this financial incentive could appeal to those who feel their life in Sweden hasn't met expectations.

However, the proposal has faced criticism from the Center Party, whose spokesperson Jonny Cato argues that the funds would be better spent on integration efforts like language and education programs.

Critics also warn that the increased grant might harm integration by suggesting immigrants are unwelcome.

Despite these concerns, the government remains committed to the plan, emphasizing the potential for public savings and the need to address welfare burdens.
