Debate Over Sweden's Repatriation Policy

Published: 2024-08-14

A recent government report on Sweden's repatriation policy has sparked a heated debate among political parties.

The report, which aimed to explore voluntary repatriation methods, concluded that such strategies are ineffective.

Jonny Cato, the Center Party's migration spokesperson, praised the findings, arguing that repatriation could marginalize vulnerable groups and worsen social exclusion.

He advocates for investment in integration efforts like education and employment.

Conversely, the Sweden Democrats criticized the report, with Ludvig Aspling and Nima Gholam Ali Pour expressing disappointment over the lack of concrete proposals to increase repatriation.

They argue that higher repatriation grants could aid integration by encouraging those who struggle to assimilate to return to their home countries.

The government is reviewing the report's recommendations, including the possibility of adjusting repatriation grants.
