Sweden-Hungary Defense Pact Paves Way for NATO Bid

Published: 2024-02-24

In a significant development in European defense and diplomacy, Sweden and Hungary have reached a defense agreement involving the purchase of four new Jas 39 Gripen fighter jets by Hungary.

This deal, finalized during Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's visit to Hungary, is seen as a pivotal step towards resolving a longstanding dispute and facilitating Sweden's NATO membership.

According to SVT's Europe correspondent Christoffer Wendick, the agreement serves as the necessary framework for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to support Sweden's NATO application, especially after Turkey's affirmative vote on the matter in January.

This strategic move not only strengthens the military capabilities of Hungary but also enhances the security cooperation between the two nations.
