Hungary Buys More Gripen Jets Amid NATO Tensions

Published: 2024-02-23

Hungary has entered into a new agreement with Sweden to purchase four additional Gripen C fighter jets, extending their current support and logistics deal for their existing aircraft until 2036. The agreement, which strengthens European security, was finalized after negotiations that began in 2021. This development comes as Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán shows reluctance to meet with US senators pushing for Sweden's NATO application ratification, raising eyebrows among international observers.

The refusal to engage with the delegation underscores the complex dynamics at play within NATO and European defense collaborations.

Meanwhile, Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson anticipates a trip to Budapest soon, aiming to foster dialogue amid the ongoing discussions about Sweden's NATO membership.
