Sweden Faces Record-Low Birth Rates

Published: 2025-02-21

Sweden is experiencing its lowest birth rates since records began in 1751, with 2024 marking a historic low.

Experts like demographer Lena Lundkvist express concern over the trend, which has been declining since the 2010s.

In Blekinge County, the situation is particularly stark, with the lowest birth rates in 55 years contributing to a population drop of 750 people in 2024. Factors such as global instability are believed to influence decisions to have fewer children, as noted by Michaela Carpelan, a mother of one.

The decline in births, coupled with higher death rates and migration out of regions like Blekinge, is reshaping Sweden’s demographic landscape.
