Sweden Faces Historic Net Emigration

Published: 2024-08-08

For the first time in over 50 years, Sweden is experiencing net emigration, with more people leaving the country than arriving.

Migrationsminister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced that the number of asylum applications has dropped significantly, with a 27% decrease in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year.

Preliminary figures show a 60% increase in emigration, leading to a net loss of approximately 5,700 people.

While the overall number of asylum seekers in the EU has risen, Sweden's numbers are at a historic low, with only 12,500 applications in 2023. Stenergard emphasized the need for more qualified labor immigration, as the country faces a shortage of workers and low birth rates.

The government is focused on reducing immigration levels, particularly in the context of asylum seekers, while aiming to improve integration for those already in the country.
