Sweden Faces Historic Low in Birth Rates

Published: 2024-03-07

Sweden is experiencing a historically low birth rate, with the number of newborns per woman reaching its lowest point in January 2024, according to the Swedish Statistics Office (SCB).

This marks the fourth consecutive year of decline, with 7,900 babies born in January, 350 fewer than the previous year.

Similar trends are observed in Uppsala County, where the birth rate has dropped to the lowest in at least 16 years.

Despite an increase in population due to immigration, fewer children are being born, a trend attributed to the aftermath of the pandemic and economic uncertainties.

Individuals like Luna and Johan Michelsson, who have chosen not to have children, argue that the decision to have children is a personal one, influenced by various factors including the global economic and environmental situation.
