Sweden's Migration Agency has revised its forecast for asylum applications in 2025, predicting a decrease to 7,000 applications, down from the previously estimated 9,500. This reduction is largely attributed to new government policies agreed upon by the ruling coalition and the Sweden Democrats.
Key changes include extending the statute of limitations for deportation decisions from four to five years, which will now only begin once the individual has left the country.
Currently, about a quarter of asylum applications come from individuals reapplying after their previous rejections expired.
The new rules aim to reduce such cases.
Additionally, work permit applications are expected to drop as rejected asylum seekers will no longer be allowed to switch to work permits while in Sweden.
Citizenship applications are also projected to decline due to enhanced security checks, leading to longer processing times.
