Decline in Asylum Applications Expected

Published: 2024-07-26

Sweden is expected to see a decline in asylum applications in the coming years, according to the Migration Agency's latest forecast.

The agency predicts that around 10,000 people will seek asylum in Sweden in 2024, which is 2,000 fewer than previously estimated.

This decrease is attributed to a reduction in the number of cases eligible for reapplication due to expired decisions.

Furthermore, the implementation of the EU's migration and asylum pact is anticipated to further lower the number of asylum seekers by 2027. As of June, approximately 5,000 individuals had applied for asylum this year, marking a 25% drop compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, around 5,500 Ukrainians sought protection under the EU's mass influx directive, leading to an upward revision of the annual forecast for Ukrainian asylum seekers from 8,000 to 11,000.
