The Swedish investigation into the alleged sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines has been officially discontinued, according to prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.
The investigation, which was conducted in cooperation with several Swedish authorities and other countries, concluded that there is no jurisdiction for Sweden in the case, as the incident occurred in international waters and there is no evidence to suggest Swedish citizens or territory were involved.
Extensive analysis of ship movements and a comprehensive crime scene investigation were part of the meticulous inquiry.
While the Swedish probe comes to an end, the German investigation continues, and the collected evidence from Sweden will be transferred to aid the German authorities.
Due to the confidentiality of international legal collaborations, Ljungqvist refrained from further commenting on the cooperation or on potential suspects.
The decision to close the investigation follows meticulous procedures, including seismic measurements and an analysis of extensive debris collected from the seafloor, which suggested deliberate explosions had caused the damage to the pipelines.
