Baltic Sea Cable Sabotage Investigation

Published: 2024-11-19

Swedish authorities have launched an investigation into suspected sabotage following the damage to several undersea cables in the Baltic Sea.

The cables, crucial for data transmission between Finland, Germany, Sweden, and Lithuania, were found severed, prompting concerns of deliberate interference.

A Chinese vessel, Yi Peng 3, present near the incident sites, has drawn particular interest from investigators.

The Swedish Navy has dispatched special ships to examine the seabed, despite challenging weather conditions.

The investigation is being led by the National Operations Department, with assistance from the Coast Guard and the Armed Forces.

Both Swedish and Finnish police are considering forming a joint task force to delve deeper into the incidents.

The situation has raised significant security concerns, with officials emphasizing the need for clarity on the cause of these disruptions.
