In a significant development, the Swedish investigation into the underwater sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2022 is set to be closed, according to reports from German media.
The responsible prosecutor, Mats Ljungqvist, indicated that a decision would be announced shortly.
However, the discontinuation of the Swedish inquiry is not expected to affect the ongoing investigation in Germany, which could potentially benefit from evidence gathered by Sweden, including parts of the damaged pipelines retrieved by the Swedish military.
Seismic measurements from Sweden and Denmark had previously confirmed explosions prior to the discovery of the leaks, leading authorities to suspect deliberate attacks on the pipelines connecting Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.
The Swedish investigation has been conducted in close collaboration with German authorities, and it's anticipated that evidence from the Swedish side may be transferred to assist the German case.
