SMHI Warns: High Forest Fire Risk Across Sweden

Published: 2024-07-21

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings for high forest fire risks in several parts of Sweden this weekend.

Skåne, Gotland, and northeastern Norrbotten are particularly affected, with temperatures expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The risk is especially high in Skåne on Sunday, where warnings are in effect from 6 AM to 11 PM.

Gotland faces an extended warning period from Saturday to Monday evening.

Despite recent wet conditions in much of the country, the combination of sunny weather and rising temperatures has increased the fire risk.

SMHI meteorologist Sofia Söderberg notes that while grass fire risks can change quickly, forest fire risks evolve more slowly.

Currently, no fire bans have been implemented, but authorities urge extreme caution with outdoor fires.
