Home: The Most Dangerous Place for Women

Published: 2024-11-26

A recent UN report highlights the alarming reality that the home is the most dangerous place for women, with an average of 140 women and girls killed daily by a partner or family member in 2023. This grim statistic was released in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The report reveals that 51,100 women and girls were murdered by someone they had a close relationship with last year, with the highest numbers in Africa.

In Europe and America, women are primarily killed by partners or close family members, contrasting with men who are generally killed outside the home by non-family members.

In Kristinehamn, Sweden, a poignant demonstration featured 32 pairs of shoes, symbolizing the women and children affected by domestic violence each month in the area, underscoring the pervasive nature of this issue.
