Increased Spring Flood Risk in Värmland

Published: 2024-03-31

Experts and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) have issued warnings about the heightened risk of severe spring flooding in Värmland and adjacent counties due to an unusual amount of snow and recent heavy rainfall.

The affected areas include Värmland, northern Örebro, northern Västmanland, southern Dalarna, and southern Gävleborg.

The risk is elevated this year with more snow than usual in Norway and northern Värmland, increasing the potential for rapid snowmelt and flooding.

The situation is being monitored closely, with critical meetings held to prepare for possible emergency responses.

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for high water flows starting from Good Friday, indicating that these conditions could lead to significant societal consequences.
