A Swedish high school student tragically lost his life in an accident during a sailing trip around the Canary Islands, confirmed by both the school and the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

The journey, which started on March 6th, was part of an educational program at a Swedish sailing high school aimed at studying marine biology and practicing navigation and seamanship.

The class intended to qualify for the lowest professional maritime certification by the end of the trip.

A crisis team has been activated and is working with school staff and the crew on site to manage the situation, while the other students are being brought back to Sweden.

The young man, who was from Svealand, passed away on March 12th.
