Swedish Gender Identity Law Stirs Political Controversy

Published: 2024-04-03

In Sweden, the controversial new gender identity law, aimed at simplifying the process for legally changing gender and lowering the age limit to 16, is causing significant rifts within the Moderate Party (M).

High-profile Moderate Party member Christian Sonesson, along with a substantial portion of the party's parliamentary group, is openly opposing the legislation, urging a halt to its progression.

The law's contentious nature has also spotlighted Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's leadership, with critics questioning his visibility and stance on the matter.

Despite internal opposition, the proposal appears set to pass in parliament with the support of the red-green parties, highlighting deep divisions within Sweden's political landscape over gender identity issues.
