Sweden's Gun Ban Sparks Political Rift

Published: 2025-02-16

A proposed ban on military-style semi-automatic weapons has ignited a political crisis in Sweden, particularly within the nationalist Sweden Democrats (SD).

The proposal, reportedly initiated by SD, has caused internal divisions, with prominent member Richard Jomshof resigning from his parliamentary role in protest.

The ban, supported by the ruling Tidö coalition, follows a mass shooting in Örebro that left ten dead.

While SD leader Jimmie Åkesson defends the proposal, critics within the party and among gun owners argue it betrays their rural voter base.

Meanwhile, the Center Party remains the only parliamentary group opposing the ban, arguing for broader solutions to prevent future tragedies.

The debate highlights growing tensions between urban and rural priorities in Swedish politics.
