Sweden's Climate Goals at Risk, Council Warns

Published: 2024-03-21

The Climate Policy Council of Sweden has issued a stark criticism of the government's climate policy, stating that it falls significantly short of achieving the country's 2030 climate goals and the net-zero emissions target by 2045. The council's annual report highlights that the current policy is expected to lead to a substantial increase in emissions starting this year and lacks a clear plan to meet climate objectives in both the short and long term.

Highlighting the reliance on uncertain assumptions, such as purchasing emission allowances from other countries and the delayed effects of proposed regulatory measures for the transportation sector, the report concludes that Sweden's climate transition is being steered onto an unnecessarily risky path.

Despite noting the government's ambition and the cross-party support for the long-term goal, the council criticizes the narrow approach and limited areas of investment outlined in the government's action plan.
