Sweden's Climate Goals Under Scrutiny

Published: 2024-09-19

Sweden's government faces criticism over its recent budget, which is accused of being misleading and insufficient in addressing climate goals.

The Green Party's Janine Alm Ericson criticized the budget for increasing emissions rather than reducing them, and for prioritizing tax cuts over welfare investments.

Despite government claims of progress, a review by the Climate Policy Council indicates that Sweden is likely to miss three out of four climate targets by 2030. The council highlights a lack of concrete plans to meet both national and EU climate goals, with particular challenges in the transport and forestry sectors.

The government has been urged to align its climate objectives with EU standards, but skepticism remains about achieving these targets without a clear strategy.
