Sweden-Hungary Talks on NATO Bid

Published: 2024-01-25

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has responded to an invitation from Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss Sweden's NATO application.

In a letter from Orbán, he expressed the need for strong mutual trust as a basis for any political or security agreements between Sweden and Hungary.

Foreign Minister Tobias Billström indicated that there would be no negotiations at this stage.

Kristersson agreed that increased dialogue would be beneficial and is open to meeting in Budapest at a mutually convenient time.

However, he also mentioned the possibility of discussions during the European Council meeting in Brussels on February 1st.

The Hungarian news site Index reported that Orbán has received a positive response from Kristersson, with the prime minister's spokesperson commenting that 'everything is going its way'.
