Sweden and Finland Strengthen Ties

Published: 2024-09-16

Sweden and Finland have committed to deepening their cooperation across several key areas, with a particular focus on improving transportation links between the two countries.

This decision was made during a historic joint government meeting in Stockholm, the first of its kind since 2009. The meeting resulted in a joint declaration highlighting six areas for enhanced collaboration, including military and civilian transport connections, especially those from Narvik in Norway to Finland and Sweden.

The importance of these connections has been underscored by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for reliable transport under winter conditions.

Additionally, the countries aim to facilitate efficient air travel between cities in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, and to enhance the exchange of population data to support cross-border living and working.

Sweden has also been asked by Finland to take responsibility for establishing a NATO headquarters in northern Finland, a proposal Sweden is keen to explore.
